School Canteen Outsourcing Adelaide

Canteen Outsourcing for Adelaide Schools

Metro Canteens SA provides canteen outsourcing for Adelaide and South Australian schools, helping students access freshly prepared, healthy food every school day.

Our outsourced school canteen services are designed to support schools with reliable daily canteen operations, fresh on-site meal preparation, online ordering, menu planning and student-focused service. Each meal is freshly made and prepared daily, with menus supporting our Healthy Eating Policy and the South Australian Government’s Right Bite Policy.

To make ordering more efficient for schools, families and students, Metro Canteens SA can support online ordering through Qkr or Flexischools. Parents and students can order online at their leisure, with parental supervision where required. This reduces manual processing, improves canteen efficiency and helps make school food service smoother for everyone.

We work with each school to understand the needs of its families before rolling out an online ordering system. Metro Canteens SA currently deploys online ordering across 90% of our school canteens.

Timely delivery is critical to successful school canteen outsourcing. To ensure students receive their meals quickly and efficiently, Metro Canteens SA operates with a 7-minute traffic management KPI.

This means our goal is for students to arrive at the canteen, select a meal, be served and eat within the canteen period, helping schools manage high-volume student service without unnecessary delays.

We do more than schools!

Metro Canteens SA does not believe in simple ‘heat and serve’ canteen outsourcing. Our meals are freshly prepared on-site daily, supported by clear Quality Assurance systems and a commitment to healthier food choices for students.

Student Canteen Support Initiative

Metro Canteens SA provides a Student Canteen Support Initiative, giving interested students the opportunity to gain real experience working in the school canteen.

Students selected for the program work alongside our canteen team, developing practical skills in food service, customer service, teamwork and workplace responsibility. Each school can select up to eight students per year to participate.

Your appointed Canteen Manager trains and supports each student to help them understand occupational health and safety procedures, food service expectations and correct canteen processes.

The program also benefits the wider school community by helping students build confidence, develop empathy and support their peers through positive interaction and customer service.

Additional benefits of the program include:

  • Building empathy towards fellow students

  • Being paid for their service at the Junior Award Rate

  • Gaining basic hospitality and kitchen operations experience
  • Learning financial management skills
  • Assisting in achieving the 7-minute KPI
  • Building confidence through positive customer service

Vegetable Garden Initiative

As part of our approach to school canteen outsourcing, Metro Canteens SA supports schools that operate a vegetable garden or would like to establish one.

Where suitable, we can negotiate with the school to purchase produce grown in the garden at supermarket retail prices. The produce can then be prepared and served through the school canteen, helping students see a direct link between growing food, healthy eating and sustainability.

We can also provide scraps from the canteen for composting, supporting the ongoing health of the school garden.

We have found this practice can

  • Encourage student self-confidence and responsibility
  • Support the physical and mental health of students
  • Promote environmental and financial sustainability
  • Fosters teamwork and collaboration skills amongst students
